New Edition of Orchestra Parts

Tams-Witmark has prepared a new, computer-engraved edition of the parts for both the full orchestration and the combo instrumentation of OLIVER! All parts follow the music, measure for measure, in the published Vocal Score, which is also Tams-Witmark’s Piano-Conductor’s Score.

The music for OLIVER! may sound simple, but it is not simplistic. Particularly the woodwind parts (which are identical for the two arrangements), are beautifully crafted to show off the ability of each instrument. In addition, we now provide a dedicated orchestra piano part, eliminating the cumbersome practice of playing the part ad libitum, using the published Vocal Score.

The full orchestration was used for the original Broadway production. The combo instrumentation was used for the tour both before and after the Broadway run. All instrumental parts were edited from original, manuscript performance materials in our archives, allowing us to add dynamics, articulation, bowing and phrasing marks that are helpful to players and conductors.

Along with this computer-engraved edition, we have prepared Full Scores (Partiturs) for both the full orchestration and the combo instrumentation. Each contains all instrumental parts, vocal material, lyrics and dialogue cues. The full scores are not part of the regular rental package for either arrangement and must be requested as a separate rental item with the entire set of full or combo parts, as appropriate.

Rehearsal CD

Tams-Witmark asked the conductor/pianist Scott Dunn to record the Piano-Conductor’s Score for the revised version of YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN, and the resulting Rehearsal CD is now available. This beautifully performed recording convincingly conveys the style and character of each of the numbers.

The Rehearsal CD is intended as a convenient aid in situations when your usual, live rehearsal pianist is not available. In addition, the recording is a fine example of just how a rehearsal pianist should treat a Piano-Conductor’s Score: the piano reduction of the entire instrumental ensemble is covered beautifully, appropriately and idiomatically, and whenever necessary, the vocal line is marked as a help for the singers. We are happy to offer our customers this extra tool to help the cast and crew learn the music while making rehearsals more practical. The Rehearsal CD is not to be used to accompany live performances.

The CD includes the entire score without the vocal line. In the musical numbers where dialogue of indeterminate length interrupts the rhythmic flow, extra track numbers are inserted at the starting point after each pause. The director can then control the accompaniment playback as necessary during rehearsals. Dialogue pauses on the Rehearsal CD are not indicative of the actual duration of each dialogue pause.

Computer-Engraved Materials

All performance materials for A CHORUS LINE have now been computer engraved and are available for rent. The orchestration by Jonathan Tunick, Billy Byers and Hershy Kay, calls for four reeds (all doubling conventional woodwinds and saxophones); six brass (three trumpets and three trombones); three keyboards (covering primarily the sounds for Piano, Harp and Strings, in addition to registrations for a wide, but not exotic, variety of orchestral combinations); two percussion (one on mallet instruments and one on trap drum set); and one bass (acoustic, electric and bass guitar).

The Piano-Conductor’s Score has been greatly improved, with many more orchestra cues than are usual for a piano score, to aid music directors who conduct from it. The vocal parts have been disentangled, both in the Piano-Conductor’s Score and in the Chorus-Vocal book: Each solo voice is now on its individual staff line and much easier to read and learn.

For the first time, a Full Score (Partitur) is now available. Like all other performance materials for A CHORUS LINE, the full score is computer engraved and contains all the instrumental parts, vocal parts, lyrics and dialogue cues traditionally found in such scores. The full score is not part of the regular package and must be requested as a separate rental item with the full orchestration.
