A new production of TITANIC, the sweeping historic musical by Peter Stone and Maury Yeston, recently opened at Charing Cross Theatre in London, where it will play through August 6th. Director Thom Southerland’s scaled-down, 20-actor chamber version of the musical was first presented at Southwark Playhouse in London in 2013.
Critics were overwhelmingly effusive in their praise of the current production. Here are some highlights from the reviews:
“What an ocean-going liner of a show it is… this ship sails into port triumphantly, on course for a West End smash!”
“Maury Yeston’s richly melodic score is packed with choral numbers… this stripped-back interpretation… affords a vigorous and ultimately moving take on the 20th century’s most notorious maritime disaster.”
“Maury Yeston’s stunningly melodic, chorally inspired music filled Southwark Playhouse fit to burst in 2013, and now — three years later — it is doing so again… The show is a must-see.”
“Peter Stone’s beautifully constructed book… brilliantly establishes the interweaving lives caught up in the story – from crew to passengers of different classes – with Yeston’s sweeping, enveloping score.”
“Everything about TITANIC is as faultless as [Senior Steward] Mr. Etches’ silver service… book tickets now. This is one voyage that you don’t want to miss.”
“The day after seeing it, I went back to see it again. It’s that good. Sung with vigor and care, staged frugally but with phenomenal flair, this disaster musical is a triumph… it’s an evening both shattering and gorgeous. And so, so much better than the film. Five stars.”
“Southerland aims (and reaches) high. The costumes are flawless, the singing superb and the 20-strong cast work as one unit where each actor excels without outshining the rest. Five Stars.”
Tams-Witmark is proud to offer this 20-actor, 6-musician Ensemble Version of TITANIC for licensing. Check out TITANIC – Ensemble Version for more details.
